Interior Painting

Ceiling painting for Naperville homes, smooth or textured

A ceiling that has gone yellow, blotchy or water-stained makes a whole room look older than it is. We seal the stains, cut a straight line where ceiling meets wall and roll the full surface in one wet pass so no lap marks show.

Short answer

Ceiling painting in Naperville is a one-session job per room. A ceiling rolled in halves dries with a visible line where the two halves meet. Published planning ranges run $1 to $2.50 per square foot, or $120 to $300 for a 10 by 12 foot room.

Why ceilings show every shortcut

Window light rakes across a ceiling at a low angle, so roller marks, patch outlines and thin spots that hide on a wall stand out overhead. Flat ceiling paint is made to swallow that light.

Most of the work is getting the surface ready: washing off kitchen film, sealing old water rings and resetting popped drywall screws. Then the ceiling is rolled in one direction, wet into wet.

Flat, matte or eggshell overhead?

Sheen matters more on a ceiling than on a wall because of how window light strikes it.

Ceilings you can roll yourself, and ceilings to hand off

A small, smooth ceiling staying the same white is a fair Saturday job.

Fine to do yourself

  • Small bedroom ceiling, same white
  • Closet and laundry room ceilings
  • Spot touch-ups with labeled leftovers

Worth calling a painter

  • Water rings needing shellac primer
  • Never-painted knockdown texture
  • Ceilings over open stairs and landings

Flat drywall ceilings

Smooth drywall is the least forgiving ceiling to paint, because there is no texture to hide a ridge or a roller line. We look across it with a work light first, marking nail pops, lifted tape seams and old patches with raised edges. Those get scraped, filled and sanded. Then they are spot primed so they do not flash through as dull squares. The finish is a flat ceiling paint. We cut the edges by brush and roll across the short width of the room while the cut line is still wet.

Textured and knockdown ceilings

Knockdown, orange peel and swirl textures hide small flaws but drink paint. A dry roller can flatten the peaks or pull loose texture off in strips. We wet a small test spot first: if the texture softens, it has never been painted and needs a sealing primer before any color. After that, a thick-nap roller and short sections push paint into the valleys without dragging. Sprayed acoustic texture is a different job, and popcorn ceiling removal covers the testing and scraping it needs.

Stain-blocking primer coats

Water rings, smoke film and the brown haze above a range come straight back through ordinary latex, sometimes within a day. Those areas get a stain-blocking primer first, usually shellac or oil based. We feather it past the edge of the mark so no halo shows later. The leak has to be fixed and the drywall dry before that coat goes on, or the stain returns from behind. Board that has gone soft or sagged needs cutting out, and water stain repair handles that step before the finish.

Colonial and Tudor ceilings in Huntington Hill

Detached single-family houses make up about 62.8% of Naperville's housing units, and in a two-story house the ceilings add up quickly. In Huntington Hill, Colonial Revival, Georgian and Tudor Revival homes mostly fall between 2,000 and 3,500 square feet. Those styles tend to divide into separate rooms rather than one open space. A dining room, den, front parlor and several bedrooms each have four edges to cut. We plan those ceilings room by room, so each one is rolled in a single wet pass and none is left half done overnight.

How a ceiling gets painted without lap marks

  1. Light check. A work light shows every seam, pop and old patch.
  2. Cover. Floors and furniture draped, fixtures and smoke detectors masked.
  3. Prep and prime. Repairs sanded smooth, stains sealed, raw texture primed.
  4. Cut and roll. Edges brushed, then rolled wet into wet across the room.
  5. Second look. Checked under raking light before the drop cloths come up.
