Short answer
Exterior painting in Naperville runs from about April through October, while overnight lows stay above 40°F, the floor on some exterior paint labels. Published Naperville ranges run $1.40 to $3.40 per square foot, and This Old House lists $2.20 to $4.40 nationally.
What makes an exterior paint job last
Paint fails at the edges first: window sills, the bottom of trim boards and the wall facing the afternoon sun. That is where the prep hours go.
Loose paint gets scraped, rough edges sanded, joints caulked and bare spots primed, and soft wood is repaired or replaced. Then two finish coats go on, with recoat timing set by temperature and humidity.

What moves the price
- Siding square footage and number of stories
- Scraping and wood repair before paint
- Trim, shutters, doors and gutters in or out
- Color changes that need tinted primer
Wood and hardboard siding
Wood lap siding and hardboard show their age soonest, especially on the sunny sides of the house. Wood needs loose paint scraped back to a sound edge, the edges feathered and bare spots primed before color. Hardboard has its own weakness: once water gets into a cut edge or nail hole, it swells and flakes. We seal the bottom drip edges, caulk the butt joints and prime swollen areas, and boards that have gone soft get flagged for replacement instead of painted over.
Full repaint or trim only
Not every house needs the whole body painted. Trim, fascia, sills and doors take the most weather and often fail years before the siding, so a trim-only repaint can buy time between full jobs. A full repaint makes sense when siding is chalking, fading unevenly or peeling in more than a few spots, or when the color is changing. At the walk-through we check each side and write down which surfaces truly need work, so the scope fits your house, not a package.

Two-story homes
Two-story houses mean extension ladders, walk boards and careful footing around landscaping and decks. High gables, second-floor sills and the fascia under the eaves are often the worst-weathered parts, simply because nobody sees them up close, so they get checked from the ladder first. We work top down so drips never land on finished paint, and we follow the shade around the house when we can, keeping wet paint out of hot afternoon sun. Gutters and downspouts get painted or masked, whichever you prefer.
Color changes
Changing color outside is a bigger decision than inside, since you see it from the street every day, and so do neighbors and any HOA. We paint test patches on a sunny wall and a shaded one so you judge them in real light. A big shift, dark to light or back, usually takes a tinted primer and two full topcoats for even coverage. Vinyl windows and the roof stay put, so new body and trim colors are chosen to work with them.

What an exterior repaint includes
Unless you change the scope, an exterior job covers:
- Scraping, sanding and feathering loose paint
- Caulking open joints and nail holes
- Spot priming every bare area
- Two finish coats on siding and trim
- Plants, walks and windows protected
The Naperville painting season, by the numbers
Average overnight lows at O'Hare reach 40.3°F in April, stay above 40°F through October and drop to 34.1°F in November. Benjamin Moore's Aura Exterior satin sheet says not to apply below 40°F air and surface temperature and warns that cool, humid weather slows drying. Sherwin-Williams rates its Duration Exterior line to 35°F, self-priming in one coat on repaints and two on bare surfaces. So exteriors here run spring to mid-fall.
From wash day to the final walk-around
- Walk the house. Every side checked, repairs and surfaces written into the scope.
- Wash and dry. Dirt, chalk and mildew rinsed off, then time to dry fully.
- Prep. Scrape, sand, caulk, and prime bare wood and every repair.
- Two coats. Top down, siding then trim, inside the right temperature window.
- Walk-around. Touch-ups, cleanup and a final look at every side together.
Signs the outside of your house is due
- Peeling on sills and trimPaint lifting where water sits, usually the first spot to fail.
- Chalk on your handA powdery residue when you rub the siding means the binder is breaking down.
- Cracked or missing caulkOpen gaps at corners and windows let water behind the paint.
- Bare gray woodExposed wood weathers fast and soaks up water, so prime it soon.
How long the house is in the painters' hands
A two-story repaint takes several working days, more with heavy prep. Rain and cold nights pause it, since paint needs dry surfaces to cure.

The outdoor season here is short, so book your exterior early.
