Short answer
Published ranges for an exterior repaint run $1.40 to $3.40 per square foot on HomeBlue's Naperville page and $2.20 to $4.40 per square foot in This Old House's cost guide. Your own number moves with the siding type, how much trim the house carries, the rot that turns up and whether the walls are one story or two.
Two published ranges and why they do not match
For the outside of a house, HomeBlue's Naperville page gives $1.40 to $3.40 per square foot. This Old House, in a guide updated in March 2026, puts it at $2.20 to $4.40 per square foot. Part of the gap is time, since the HomeBlue page dates from February 2022, and part is method: cost sites measure and bundle differently, and none of them has walked around your house.
Use the pair as bookends for a first budget, then expect the walk-through to place you within them or past them. The things that push a house toward the top are the same short list almost every time: tall walls, plenty of trim, peeling paint that has to be scraped back and wood that has to be fixed before primer. A full exterior repaint quote should show each of those as its own line.
Height deserves its own mention. A two-story wall means extension ladders or a lift, more setup and more time spent moving equipment around the house. The tall gable ends of a two-story colonial can take as long as an entire side of a ranch, even though the square footage looks similar on paper.
Siding material changes the math
Vinyl, aluminum, fiber cement, hardboard and cedar each take paint differently. HomeAdvisor lists vinyl siding painting at $1 to $3 per square foot, and Bob Vila puts fiber cement at $1.20 to $3.20. Cedar that is stained rather than painted runs $2.71 to $5.58 per square foot in Homewyse's estimate, because the wood is cleaned, brightened and coated by brush.
Vinyl adds a color question. Darker shades absorb more heat, so painters stick to vinyl-safe colors that will not warp the panels. Aluminum has a chalky surface that has to be washed off first, and hardboard swells if water reaches a cut edge, so those edges get sealed. Our page on painting vinyl, aluminum and fiber cement explains how each is handled.
Trim, soffits and fascia, priced by the foot
On most two-story houses, trim is where the hours go. Window casing, fascia, soffits, rake boards and door trim are all brushwork, and they are the first surfaces to peel. This Old House lists exterior trim painting at $4.25 to $8.25 per linear foot, while Bob Vila gives a wider span of between $1 and $6 per linear foot.
That spread is exactly why a good quote breaks trim out from siding. A house with many windows, decorative trim or wide fascia can carry as much labor in trim as in walls. When the siding is still sound, a trim, soffit and fascia repaint by itself is a real option, and it buys time before the whole house needs paint.

Rot, washing and prep before the first coat
Paint does not fix soft wood. Window sills, the bottoms of door jambs, fascia corners and garage trim tend to rot first, and they have to be cut out and replaced or filled before anyone primes. HomeAdvisor lists dry rot repair at $500 to $2,352 and wood siding repair at $700 to $2,850. Ask whether rot repair is in the price or billed as found.
Washing comes next. Angi puts house pressure washing at $100 to $720. Dirt, chalk and mildew have to come off for paint to bond, and the wood has to dry before it is coated. Then comes scraping to a sound edge, sanding, caulking open joints and priming bare spots, which is where most of the labor sits.
Age plays into all of this. Recent Census survey data puts about 25.8% of Naperville homes before 1980, so a share of houses here carry old layers of paint that may be failing. If yours predates 1978, the lead paint questions guide explains what to ask before scraping starts.

Call (630) 760-2729Doors, garage doors and small line items
Entry doors and garage doors are often priced per door. Fixr lists an exterior door at $112 to $205 for one side, or $225 to $409 for both sides. HomeAdvisor puts garage door painting at $200 to $500 per door. Shutters, railings, gutters and light posts are usually extras, so point them out at the walk-through instead of assuming they are in.
Small items are also where you can steer the budget. Repainting just the front door and the garage door in a new color refreshes a house for far less than a full job, and it lets you live with a color before committing every wall to it.
Season and scheduling around Chicago weather
National Weather Service normals put O'Hare's average overnight low at 40.3°F in April and 45.4°F in October, then 34.1°F in November. Benjamin Moore's Aura Exterior satin data sheet says not to apply below 40°F, while Sherwin-Williams rates Duration Exterior down to 35°F. Those limits, not the calendar, set when exterior work can happen.
Spring dates are worth booking early. A normal year brings the last spring freeze around April 21 and the first fall freeze around October 19, which leaves roughly six months of usable painting weather. Late-season work is possible but less forgiving, since cool, humid nights stretch drying and recoat times.
If the house needs both inside and outside work, split it by season. Interior rooms can be painted through the winter, and the exterior follows once the nights stay mild. One walk-through can price both parts and set the order, which also spreads the cost across two parts of the year.
A budget worksheet you can fill in tonight
- Siding type and the number of stories.
- A count of windows, doors and garage doors.
- Spots where paint has peeled to bare wood.
- Soft or cracked wood at sills, jambs and fascia.
- A color change, or the same color again.
- Extras: shutters, railings, porch floor, deck.
Bring the list to the walk-through. It keeps the conversation on scope, and it makes two quotes easy to compare side by side.
